Introduction

Prior to transferring a schematic to a PCB design, it is necessary to assign footprints to each symbol in your schematic

1. Open your schematic
2. Right-click on a symbol and select “Edit Footprint” (or, with your mouse over a symbol, type “f”)
3. A dialog will open. If unassigned, the “footprint” field will be empty
4. Click on the library icon next to the “footprint” field to open up KiCad’s footprint libraries
5. The list of libraries is visible in the left navigation pane, and the list of footprints is available in the list to its immediate right. In the right view window, a preview of the selected footprint loads upon selection.
6. Find the correct footprint and select the “insert footprint on board” icon.
7. Repeat the above steps for every part in your schematic.
